Empowering Purposeful Growth

Executive Advisory

Executive Advisory

A trusted advisor for the responsibility only you can carry.

Senior leaders rarely need more advice in the abstract.

They need a place to think clearly about what is actually happening, examine decisions before they become consequences and work honestly with the leadership and organizational realities surrounding them.

Evolve provides ongoing executive advisory to CEOs, senior executives and other leaders carrying consequential organizational responsibility.

We stay close enough to understand the leader, the organization and the context in which decisions are being made.

Leadership gets more complex as responsibility expands.

At senior levels, the questions are rarely confined to the leader alone.

A decision about one executive can affect an entire leadership team. A succession question can expose uncertainty about governance, authority or the leadership bench. Growth can change what the organization requires from a CEO. A strained relationship can begin to impede decisions far beyond the people directly involved.

And some of the most consequential questions cannot be worked through easily with colleagues, employees or a board.

Executive advisory creates a confidential relationship in which leaders can step outside the immediate pressure of the organization, examine what they are seeing and strengthen their judgment about what comes next.

The work is grounded in the real organization the executive is responsible for leading.

What we work on

The agenda follows the leader and the organization.

Our advisory relationships commonly involve:

  • consequential decisions

  • leadership and succession transitions

  • changing executive roles and responsibilities

  • executive-team dynamics

  • difficult relationships and conversations

  • questions of authority, accountability and governance

  • organizational growth and change

  • leadership-bench development

  • culture and ways of working

  • the human implications of strategic and technological change

  • the leader's own development as responsibility expands

Sometimes the work centers primarily on the executive. Sometimes it reveals a need elsewhere in the organization.

We do not assume every leadership problem requires an organizational intervention, or that every organizational problem can be solved by developing the leader.

We pay attention to both.

More than executive coaching

Coaching remains one of the developmental methods available within Evolve's work. Executive advisory is broader.

The relationship can include reflection, challenge, developmental coaching, organizational sensemaking, preparation for consequential conversations, interpretation of organizational dynamics and candid counsel as situations evolve.

Because we understand leadership in context, we can also recognize when the issue requires attention beyond the individual executive.

Where appropriate, Evolve can work with the leadership team or broader organization through organizational diagnosis, team development, facilitation, leadership development or organizational-effectiveness work.

The method follows the problem.

How the relationship works

Executive advisory is typically an ongoing relationship rather than a fixed sequence of sessions.

We begin by understanding the leader's responsibilities, organizational context and the circumstances creating the need for advisory support.

From there, the relationship develops around the actual work of leadership.

That continuity matters.

Over time, we learn the organization's history, relationships, patterns and pressures. We can notice what is changing, remember what has been tried and ask better questions because we understand the context in which the answers must work.

Our role is not to make decisions for the leader.

It is to bring perspective, judgment, developmental depth and organizational understanding to the decisions the leader is responsible for making.

The client remains the author.

Who executive advisory is for

This work is best suited to senior leaders carrying meaningful responsibility for an organization, business, institution or significant part of one.

Evolve works primarily with leaders in architecture, engineering, construction and related built-world organizations, with selective work in adjacent industries where the challenge and relationship strongly fit our capabilities.

Clients often engage us during periods of growth, transition, succession, organizational strain or expanded leadership responsibility.

But a crisis is not required.

Some advisory relationships exist because a leader recognizes the value of having an experienced, independent person paying sustained attention as the organization evolves.

Human development. Organizational reality.

Evolve works where human development and organizational reality meet.

We bring the depth of human understanding associated with excellent coaching together with the organizational perspective required to work with consequential enterprise questions.

That allows us to stay with a question long enough to discover what kind of question it actually is.

See what is actually happening. Strengthen the capacity to respond. Build what comes next.
